Geneva International Motor Show 2017: Amazing New Supercar Debuts
The Geneva International Motor Show has just drawn to a close after another exciting edition of the annual event. The Geneva Motor Show is renowned as one of the most important car exhibitions and is often hailed as the best car show in the world, and certainly in Europe.
The halls of the Palexpo Convention Centre are where big name automobile marques unveil their latest and greatest offerings. The 87th edition took place between 9th and 19th March 2017 and didn’t disappoint. We attended the event and discovered enough cars to to inspire anyone interested in supercar hire, so we’ve outlined our favourite cars below.
The Best New Debuts
A phenomenal selection of high-powered ultra-performance cars were on display. One of the most popular was the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, lighter and faster than the standard Huracan, it holds the record for the fastest production car to ever lap the legendary Nurburgring circuit. It rockets from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds.
The Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar is the result of an innovative new collaboration between Aston and Red Bull. The lightweight 200mph mid-engined coupe is extreme in every way, not to mention incredibly popular since all 175 have sold out and 150 of those are road-legal. With a combination of racecar aerodynamics and a new V12 hybrid powertrain, it’s a game-changer.
The stunning McLaren 720S was the talk of the show. Everything in its design focuses on aerodynamics. The 720 in its name stands for its 720 horsepower straight from the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. The brand promises it will “redefine expectations of supercar excellence” and we can’t help but believe it. The exterior introduces a new ‘double skin’ door construction that eliminates the need for the prominent side air scoops previously thought essential in supercar design. The 720S is yet more proof that McLaren is becoming a serious threat to Ferrari’s dominance over the supercar market.
Speaking of the Italian giant, the Ferrari 812 Superfast was another crowd favourite that is claimed to be “the most powerful and fastest Ferrari in the marque’s history.” This one has a name to take literally since it can blast from zero to 128 mph in around 8 seconds and features a top speed of 211 mph. The aerodynamics are designed so that every character line is a deliberate channel to increase cooling or down force or reduce drag.
The Pagani Huayra Roadster finally made an appearance after years of anticipation and it was worth the wait. The sleek car is insanely attractive and blindingly fast with a powerful V12 engine, wilder styling, and a revised gearbox. The Pagani Huayra Roadster is priced from around a cool £2 million, but all 100 Roadsters have already been sold.
The Mercedes-AMG GT Concept is a hybrid and the Porsche Panamera’s closest rival. This concept uses a unique combination of a gas-powered 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, a high-performance electric motor, and a powerful yet lightweight battery to get 805 horsepower.
The Best of the Rest
The Geneva Motor Show was once again dominated by exotic cars, but there were some good everyday car debuts including Ford’s Fiesta ST. Elsewhere, there were plenty of SUVs on display with Volvo’s latest XC60 leading the way. However, the Range Rover Velar stood its ground and confirmed Land Rover’s undisputed supremacy as the king of the SUVs.
Of the established models, an orange convertible version of the Audi R8 V10 Spyder turned heads at the Motor Show. As an everyday supercar, you can’t get much better than this refined and thrilling drop-top. If you’re interested in a taste of what the Audi R10 Spyder is capable of, rent the powerful sports car from us to find out.
Rolls-Royce displayed its bespoke collection, indulgent and whimsical with the custom-built Ghost sporting a thousand crushed diamonds infused in the paint. Meanwhile, BMW showcased its new generation 5-Series and Renault’s famous Trezor electric car was hailed as the most beautiful concept car.
